9 Valentine's Day Dates You Haven't Tried Yet

By Christine Ascher on February 12, 2018

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and if you find yourself struggling to figure out something special for you and your significant other to do, you’re not alone. If you just go for the typical dinner and a movie date, your Valentine’s Day may end up being nothing special. Make this date stand out by trying something new. If you’re looking for something unique to do for a fun Valentine’s Day date, check out some of the following ideas to make the day special.

1. Go to A Museum

One fun, and relatively inexpensive, Valentine’s Day date is going to a museum. Whether it’s the favorite museum of you or your significant other, or one that neither of you have ever been to, you can enjoy the experience of exploring together a museum that you normally wouldn’t go to. Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to check out some local attractions that you may not have visited before, so take advantage of the things to do in your own town.

2. Have a Picnic

If you live in a warmer climate, try making a Valentine’s Day picnic. You and your significant other can prepare some of your favorite foods, and you can spend the day at a local park enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. Fortunately for most college students, this is also a relatively inexpensive date option.

3. Go Dancing

Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to try out one of those classic date ideas that you’ve never bothered to plan–such as dancing. For a fun night out, you can go to a dance club or you could even try out a dance class together if you really want to perfect your moves. Any partner dances, such as salsa or tango, will give you a fun way to connect with your significant other and may even become a staple date night for the two of you.

4. Have a Game Night

Just because it’s Valentine’s Day doesn’t mean you have to go out to have a fun date night. One great option for Valentine’s Day is to have a game night in; choose some of your favorite games, have some friends over, and spend the night in friendly competition. If you live in a colder climate, having a game night will also include the bonus of not having to go out into the cold weather to celebrate the occasion.

5. Go for a Hike

If you and your significant other are more outdoorsy, going on a Valentine’s Day hike is a great way to spend some time together while enjoying and exploring the nature around you. Once you get to the top of your hike, you can spend some time appreciating the view—which, coincidentally, also makes for a pretty romantic atmosphere.

6. Go on a Weekend Trip

If you’re looking for something extra special to do for Valentine’s Day, consider making the holiday last for an entire weekend by going away on a trip with your significant other. Whether you go far away or stick closer to home, a weekend trip will give you more time to spend with each other and will also give you the chance to take a break from your normal routine and relax a bit. To keep costs down, consider a road trip or staying in an Airbnb rather than a hotel.

7. Have a Brunch Date

Rather than going out to dinner on Valentine’s Day, mix it up by going instead on a brunch date. This can give you the chance to try out some new places to eat, or to check out the brunch options at some of your favorite dinner spots. Whether you try out a new restaurant or visit one of your old favorites, you’ll be able to enjoy a good meal and still have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy together.

8. Go Ice Skating

One way to make the most of the chilly weather for Valentine’s Day is by going ice skating. Whether you’re an ice skating pro or just a beginner, you and your significant other will be able to support each other out on the ice. If it gets too cold, you can always take a break for some hot chocolate.

9. Attend a Cooking Class

Rather than going out to dinner, consider making dinner together for Valentine’s Day. Choose your favorite type of food, and attend a cooking class to learn how to make a dish together. You’ll be able to enjoy the food once you finish making it, and you’ll know how to recreate it for future date nights.

Regardless of how long you and your significant other have been together, Valentine’s Day provides a great opportunity to spend some time together and to break out of your dating rut to find some new ways to have fun together. Whether you choose to stay in or go out, to splurge or stick to a budget, with a little thought and planning, you can make this Valentine’s Day your most special one yet.
